"First Fridays for Food Security"
On the first Friday of each month through April 2012, Catholics can "fast" by limiting meal spending to the amount allotted for a family of their size in the USDA Modified Thrifty Food Plan, which is used as the basis for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly called food stamps). The Facebook event kicked off last month and continues on Friday, June 3. The theme for June 3 is "A Eucharistic Response to Hunger." On that day, Catholics will be asked to reflect on the connection between our celebration of the Eucharist and our concern for our brothers and sisters in need. Remind Catholics in your network to visit the Facebook event page to participate!
Become a Legislative Advocate for Catholic Values
Faithful citizenship is about more than elections. It requires ongoing participation in the continuing political and legislative process. "It calls Catholics to see civic and political responsibilities through the eyes of faith and to bring our moral convictions to public life. Catholics in public life have a particular responsibility to bring together consistently their faith, moral principles, and public responsibilities. Believers are called to be a community of conscience within the larger society and to test public life by the values of Scripture and the principles of Catholic social teaching. Our responsibility is to measure all candidates, policies, parties, and platforms by how they protect or undermine the life, dignity, and rights of the human person, whether they protect the poor and vulnerable and advance the common good." The Diocese of Joliet - Peace and Social Justice Ministry invites you to exercise your faithful citizenship by participating in the Diocesan Legislative Advocacy Network.
